A paver calculator is an online construction tool used to estimate the quantity of paving stones or concrete pavers needed to cover a specific surface area.
It calculates the total paving area and estimates the required number of pavers, including an allowance for cutting waste.
The calculator also determines the approximate volumes of aggregate base material and bedding sand needed beneath the paved surface.
These calculations are useful for various outdoor construction projects, including:
Backyard seating areas, outdoor kitchens, and entertainment spaces.
Garden paths, pedestrian walkways, and entrance pathways.
Residential parking spaces and vehicle access areas.
Decorative paved surfaces and garden installations.
Accurate material estimation helps you prepare a construction plan and coordinate deliveries before installation begins.
The deep4sol Paver Calculator combines several material calculations into one tool.
Calculates the approximate number of paving units required based on the total project area and selected paver dimensions.
Accounts for additional pavers that may be needed when installing patterns, trimming edges, or working around obstacles.
Estimates the volume of aggregate base material required beneath the paving surface based on the specified base depth.
Determines the approximate bedding sand volume needed to create a uniform setting layer beneath the pavers.
Supports material planning for patios, pedestrian walkways, and residential driveways.
Enter the following information to calculate your paving material requirements.
| Input | Description | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Total length of the paving area | Calculates surface area |
| Width | Total width of the paving area | Calculates surface area |
| Project Type | Patio, walkway, or driveway | Identifies the intended application |
| Paver Size | Length and width of individual pavers | Estimates paver quantity |

| Base Depth | Thickness of the compacted aggregate layer | Calculates base material volume |
| Bedding Sand Thickness | Thickness of the sand bedding layer | Calculates sand requirements |
Important: Use consistent measurement units and verify the manufacturer’s paver dimensions before calculating quantities.
For irregular areas, divide the project into smaller rectangular sections and calculate each section separately.
Follow these steps to estimate the materials required for your paving project.
Measure the length and width of the surface you want to pave.
For example, a length of 16 feet and a width of 12 feet give a total paving area of 192 square feet.
Choose the appropriate application, such as a patio, walkway, or driveway.
Project type matters because pedestrian surfaces and vehicle-bearing surfaces generally have different foundation requirements.
Provide the length and width of the paving units.
Common rectangular paver dimensions include 8 × 4 inches, although actual product sizes vary by manufacturer.
Select your intended paving arrangement.
Straight layouts typically involve fewer complex cuts, while diagonal patterns and irregular boundaries may produce additional waste.
Specify the required aggregate base depth and bedding sand thickness.
Use the installation specifications appropriate for your soil conditions and expected loads.
The calculator estimates:
Compare these quantities with supplier packaging and delivery options before purchasing.
Understanding the underlying formulas helps you verify estimates and make adjustments when necessary.
For a rectangular surface:
Paving Area = Length × Width
Example: a patio measures 16 feet long and 12 feet wide.
16 × 12 = 192 sq ft
The patio requires coverage for 192 square feet. For measurements in meters, the result is expressed in square meters (m²).
First, calculate the area covered by one paving unit. For paver dimensions measured in inches:
Paver Area (sq ft) = (Length × Width) ÷ 144
Next, calculate the number of pavers:
Paver Count = Total Paving Area ÷ Area per Paver
To account for cutting waste:
Total Pavers = Paver Count × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
Round the final result up to the next whole paver.
Waste depends on the laying pattern, perimeter complexity, and material dimensions. Manufacturer coverage rates should be used when joint spacing or nominal paver dimensions affect the calculation.
The aggregate base provides structural support beneath the paving surface. For measurements in feet and inches:
Base Volume (ft³) = Area (ft²) × Base Depth (in) ÷ 12
Convert cubic feet to cubic yards:
Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27
For metric calculations:
Base Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × Depth (mm) ÷ 1000
These formulas estimate the installed volume at the specified depth. Loose aggregate delivery quantities may differ because of compaction.
Bedding sand creates a consistent setting surface beneath conventional concrete pavers. Use the following formula:
Sand Volume (ft³) = Area (ft²) × Sand Thickness (in) ÷ 12
The result represents bedding sand only. Sand required for filling joints between pavers must be estimated separately.
Suppose you want to construct a rectangular patio using concrete paving blocks.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Patio Length | 16 feet |
| Patio Width | 12 feet |
| Paver Size | 8 × 4 inches |
| Example Waste Allowance | 8% |
| Compacted Base Depth | 6 inches |
| Bedding Sand Thickness | 1 inch |
16 × 12 = 192 sq ft
An 8 × 4-inch paver covers approximately 0.2222 square feet.
192 ÷ (32 ÷ 144) = 864 pavers
Adding an illustrative 8% waste allowance:
864 × 1.08 = 933.12
Round up to 934 pavers.
192 × (6 ÷ 12) = 96 cubic feet
96 ÷ 27 = 3.56 cubic yards
192 × (1 ÷ 12) = 16 cubic feet
16 ÷ 27 = 0.59 cubic yards
| Paving area | 192 sq ft |
|---|---|
| Pavers including waste | 934 pcs |
| Compacted aggregate base | 3.56 yd³ |
| Bedding sand | 0.59 yd³ |
These estimates assume a rectangular surface and paver coverage based on nominal dimensions without separate joint adjustments. The waste percentage is illustrative and may differ from the calculator’s estimate.
The appropriate paver base thickness depends on soil strength, drainage conditions, climate, and anticipated traffic loads.
The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association provides introductory recommendations for conventional interlocking concrete pavement applications.
| Project Type | Typical Aggregate Base Depth |
|---|---|
| Pedestrian Walkway | 4–6 inches |
| Residential Driveway | 6–8 inches |
| Residential Patio | Often 4–6 inches, depending on site conditions |
These are preliminary planning ranges, not universal construction specifications. Weak soil, heavy traffic, and freeze–thaw conditions may require additional base thickness.
For conventional sand-set concrete pavers, approximately 1 inch (25 mm) of screeded bedding sand is commonly used.
Permeable paving systems and alternative aggregate installations may require different foundation materials and construction methods.
Several factors can influence your final material requirements.
Actual sizes and manufacturer’s coverage specifications affect the quantity.
Herringbone, diagonal, and straight arrangements can produce different amounts of cutting waste.
Curved edges, corners, and obstructions increase measurement complexity.
Unstable or poorly draining soils may require additional foundation preparation.
Loose material volume differs from the finished compacted volume.
Joint widths, edge restraints, drainage, and paver thickness influence the overall construction design.
For vehicle-bearing paving, interlocking herringbone patterns are commonly recommended because they provide resistance to movement under traffic.
Ordering only the exact theoretical number of pavers can result in shortages after cutting and trimming.
Include a reasonable allowance based on the layout.
Confusing feet with inches or meters with centimeters can significantly distort area and volume calculations.
Verify every measurement before calculating.
A base designed for a pedestrian walkway may be inadequate for a driveway.
Use foundation specifications suitable for the intended load and ground conditions.
Bedding sand supports the paving units, while jointing sand fills spaces between them.
These are separate material requirements.
Base gravel quantities calculated at compacted depth should not automatically be treated as loose delivery volumes.
Confirm ordering quantities with your material supplier.
